While the appetite for hedge funds has developed among plan sponsors in recent years, the secretive nature of the investments still prove to be too risky for some, leading SEI to recommend that the funds will need to change their approach if they want to gain a larger share of institutional dollars.
According to a white paper by SEI titled "Five Critical Challenges for Hedge Funds Taking Aim at the Institutional Market", hedge fund assets under management have been growing at a compound annual rate of 25% since 1990, with a large part of that growth coming from the institutional market.
