TOKYO _ Nearly a year ago, I set out across the Western Pacific to retrace the last great battles of World War II. What I learned along the way is that 50 years later, the war is still very much with us.
It continues to color relations between Americans and Japanese at the personal and political levels. And it remains an irritant within both of our societies.
The bitter quarreling among Americans over the morality and the military value of dropping the nuclear bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki is only the most obvious example.
