Bayer and Health Canada have informed health care professionals of new safety information regarding the drug Trasylol (aprotinin), a drug injected during heart bypass surgery to help reduce bleeding and the need for blood transfusions.
The use of Trasylol may lead to kidney problems that require dialysis after surgery. Patients who may already have kidney problems, or receive other drugs during surgery that can harm the kidney, are at higher risk of developing kidney problems when given Trasylol.
