JUST as it seemed that Tony Blair walked on water, he has cut his foot on a hidden rock. After denying repeatedly this month that Labour had any plans to raise taxes, Mr Blair went even further in an interview published on September 24th in the Independent on Sunday, a mere week before Labour's annual conference at Brighton. He suggested that Labour might cut taxes for "the ordinary family". Tories rejoiced that he had moved the political debate on to what they regard as their ground; delegates to the Labour conference will be less jubilant.
