For many decades archaeologists believed that the original site of the 1607 fort at Jamestown had long since disappeared into the James River. But they were wrong. In a project that began in 1994, archaeologist William M. Kelso and a team of experts at the Jamestown Rediscovery project have unearthed the beginnings of English settlement in America.
