CONTRACTORS working in the former Marine Ballroom in Hill Road, which is being developed into 29 luxury apartments, discovered several lingering memorials to the building's wartime use as a billet for Polish troops stationed in the town.
On taking down panelling on the gable of the building nearest to Victoria Park, several murals were uncovered which had been painted by the men billeted there.
Although one or two have a martial theme, others depict rural and urban scenes, an indicator perhaps of how homesick the men were for their mother country which, at that time, was occupied by Germany.
