50 YEARS AGO. Drycleaners are capitalizing (er, socializing?) upon Russia's recent launch of the Sputnik satellite. Fargo, N.D.-based Reed Cleaners dropped more than 1,000 miniature Styrofoam Sputniks imprinted with its name and telephone number over the city on Dec. 17, and the operation's switchboard lit up 15 minutes later.
"Callers asked what the Sputniks were good for," says owner Harold Reed, "and the reply was 'Christmas souvenirs.'" The town was still buzzing about the promo when the real Sputnik burned up on reentry Jan. 4 after three months in orbit.
