Political pressures, along with I/S unresponsiveness, have led corporate management to search for alternatives to the mainframe-centric approach favored by I/S for many years. Popular alternatives include downsizing (often referred to as rightsizing) and cooperative processing -- representing a special case of client/server computing with the mainframe functioning as a server. Cooperative processing capitalizes on the substantial investments in hardware, software, standards and procedures of any mainframe-centric environment, bringing synergy and competitive advantage to the organization.
