Cultures are like living beings: They strive to stake out individual spheres of influence. They try to dominate, combat, or imitate one another. They compete among themselves. Yet regardless of the extent to which cultures over- or underestimate one another, if they wish to survive in this world with its constant flow of wares and currencies, they must recognize one another as real entities. The amount of understanding cultures summon up for one another above and beyond this most necessary level is another matter altogether.
