CATTLE producers need "a robust animal identification system" to contain and eliminate catastrophic diseases and minimize the economic impact of such disease on their herds and industry, according to U.S. Department of Agriculture undersecretary Bruce Knight.

"It's all about your herd's health," he said, emphasizing that he can embrace the value of herd health, having spent 20 years rebuilding the genetics of his own cattle herd in South Dakota.
