ON THE last day of a five-day U.S. pastoral visit, Pope John Paul II went to Maryland, the state that gave birth to American religious freedom, and said that for democracy to endure, "biblical wisdom" must be part of the public debate. During an interfaith gathering October 8 at the Cathedral of Mary our Queen in Baltimore the pope spoke on the theme of "moral truth" as the foundation and sustainer of the American experiment in participatory democracy.
The pontiff also returned to themes stressed earlier in his trip when he visited New York and New Jersey: that the U.S. should be a moral force for good and that Americans need to reach out to society's most vulnerable ...
