A centuries-old tradition of cockfighting in rural Virginia may come to an end, its proponents say, if legislation moving through the General Assembly becomes law.
A pair of bills to increase penalties for the activity passed hurdles in each chamber Monday and may soon be on the governor's desk. Both measures - SB592 and HB656 - make attending an animal fight or allowing a minor to get involved in animal fighting Class 6 felonies.
