Within Greater London, the onequare-mile area known as "the City" sits atop the remains of both Roman and medieval towns. Besides containing many of Great Britain's oldest buildings, the City is packed with color and fascinating stories.
The City, also known as "the Square Mile," is autonomous in that it governs itself with its own laws, police force, and lord mayor. If the reigning queen wishes to enter the City, she must gain permission from the lord mayor. Once the lord mayor grants permission, the queen ceremoniously holds his sword of state.
