President Bush has nominated Andrew von Eschenbach, MD, to be commissioner of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Von Eschenbach had been serving as acting commissioner since last September when he replaced Lester Crawford, DVM.

Sen. Mike Enzi (R-WY), chairman of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions committee, said he will hold a confirmation hearing as quickly as possible.

However, the ongoing dispute over the FDA's position on allowing over-the-counter sales of emergency contraceptive pills (Plan B pills), may delay the process indefinitely.
