South Africa snatched Maria Smith Williams' imagination in a single swoop.
And once it did, the 29-year-old Miami native quit her job as dean of special programs at Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Ga. Now she and her husband, an automobile sales manager, are packing up and making arrangements to leave Georgia by January and move to South Africa.
Their decision was as sudden and unlikely as the political metamorphosis of South Africa, apartheid's former cradle.
And the Williamses are no fluke. More and more, black Americans are embracing South Africa as their foster nation.
