THE author of this autobiography is something more than an actor, he is a presence. This was brought home to me more than twenty years ago when he loomed up at my elbow in the Hotel George V in Paris and said: "I'm Charlton Heston," to which, taken aback to find myself suddenly confronted by a living legend, I could only reply: "By God, so you are!"
