Both natural calamities - possibly aggravated by mismanagement - and a growing protest movement among farmers and fishermen are wreaking havoc with shrimp farms on India's East Coast, especially Andhra Pradesh.

Farmers and fishermen opposed to shrimp farms in the region have been holding a series of rallies to demand a ban on such farms, saying they harm the environment and cost them their jobs. They also want an end to foreign deep-sea fishing ventures.
