WASHINGTON - Six months after it first recommended that federal guidelines should recognize the positive role that supplements can play in maintaining healthy diets, the Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN) contends that proposed revisions to the current standards still don't go far enough.

"The 1995 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee report represents a useful updating of scientific thought in several respects," says a CRN spokeswoman. "But in other areas the proposed revisions are still stuck in 1980."

In particular, she notes, the proposed changes fail to acknowledge the latest facts about the benefits and safety of vitamin and mineral supplements. ...
