KANSAS CITY, Mo., Nov. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Coal, chemical, agricultural, automotive, and paper shippers saved more than $18 billion last year as a result of railroad deregulation, according to Edwin L. Harper, president and chief executive officer of the Association of American Railroads (AAR).
Speaking at the annual meeting of the National Industrial Transportation League, the nation's largest shipper organization, Mr. Harper said that the savings estimate is based upon how much more shippers of these commodities would have paid last year had rail freight rates kept pace with inflation since 1981.
