The prevalence of autism continued to climb after thimerosal was eliminated from nearly all childhood vaccines in 2001, researchers reported.
This finding refutes the contention that thimerosal exposure through routine vaccination caused the surge in autism noted in recent years, according to Dr. Robert Schechter and his associates at the California Department of Public Health, Richmond.
Thimerosal, a preservative used to prevent microbial contamination of vaccines, contains ethylmercury and was thought by some to have contributed to the recent increase in autism diagnoses. All but trace amounts of thimerosal were removed from all vaccines in the recommended infant ...
