Southwestern Bell Telephone Co., on the verge of blocking a challenge to its hold on the Kansas telephone market, remains the regional Bell operating company with the golden touch.
Unlike telcos that lost their monopolies this year, SW Bell staved off competitors in Texas and Missouri with a combination of hardball tactics and grassroots support.
Kansas may be next to fall in line. A state telecommunications task force recently approved certain recommendations in a consultant's report that critics say couldn't favor SW Bell more if it had been written by the company itself.
