TWC, genius unveil rail.

The Weinstein Co. and Genius Products have unveiled distrib banner Third Rail Releasing, which will launch with Friday's release of George A. Romero's zombiefest "Diary of the Dead."

The division is an effort to promote lower-budget films that would otherwise get lost in the marketplace--an idea whose time came, passed and may now be ready for a resurgence.

Third Rail plans to release a slate of six to 10 films annually, with the aim of spending less than $5 million per picture. TWC's newly installed chief operating officer, Lee Solomon, will head the label.

"It's an alternative label designed to release true independent films with an edge," Solomon said.
