NEW YORK - A group of South Sea pearl industry leaders has formed an organization to tell the world about the real thing.
Dubbed the South Sea Pearl Consortium (SSPC), the not-for-profit group plans to educate the buying public, retailers, the fashion industry and the media about South Sea cultured pearls, a spokesman said. Over the last several years, jewelry mislabeled as South Sea pearl has been showing up in various retail venues, and the SSPC wants to tell the public how to discern the genuine article from inferior imitations.
Other goals are to increase the gem's visibility and sales volume worldwide.
