A proposal by an Eastern Shore lawmaker to tighten restrictions on people's ability to change their names has raised questions about whether his bill is aimed at illegal immigrants.
The measure, in its current form, would require someone to prove he or she is a U.S. citizen to apply for a legal name change.
Del. Lynwood Lewis, D-Accomack , said HB151 was inspired by anecdotal information that an increasing number of people filing to change their names in his district's Circuit Court had no real connection to Accomack and Northampton counties or to Virginia.
