NEW YORK -- With as many as 70 million Americans suffering from some sort of sleeping problem, the market for over-the-counter sleep aids is booming.

For the 52 weeks ended January 27, combined sales in the sleeping aids liquids and sleeping aids tablets categories grew by 24.9% in drug stores, according to data from Information Resources Inc. (IRI).

Individually, the $8 million liquids category increased 15.1% while the much larger ($68.3 million) tablets category soared by 26.2%.

Experts say that Americans' sleeping difficulties are taking a toll on our society and putting our overall health at risk.
