As U.S. crude imports from Latin American countries have begun to edge out longer-haul shipments from the Middle East, U.S. tankering firms have seen a shift in shipping and lightering trends.

"The trend [of more short-haul shipments] is there, and we're seeing a reduction in long-haul imports that in turn negatively affects our business," a source at a lightering firm said.

The increasing volume of short-haul shipments -- which now make up more than 51% of all U.S. crude imports compared with about 44% in 1993 -- tend to be smaller and more flexible about where they can enter the United States.
