Greenville, S.C.-based electronic component maker Kemet Corp. is closing plants and cutting more than 800 jobs in the United States, Mexico and Europe.

The restructuring, aimed at cutting costs, boosting profits and consolidating recent Kemet acquisitions, will see 7 percent of the group's workforce axed.

That percentage includes a reduction of around 120 U.S. jobs and 250 in Mexico. Some processes will be switched to sites in China, the company said in a news release.

In addition, plants are set to close in Vergato, Italy, and Towcester, England, with about 420 layoffs expected, Kemet said. The plants are ...
