Ginger Rogers, 83, the legendary, versatile. and durable Hollywood star who is recalled as the most memorable of Fred Astaire's dancing partners, died at her home in Rancho Mirage, California, on April 25, 1995.
The former child vaudeville performer and Charleston contest winner became a Broadway star while still in her teens, introducing the songs "But Not for Me" and "Embraceable You" in the Gershwins' 1930 musical Girl Crazy. Easily making the transition to films, she achieved her breakthrough at the age of twenty-two, when she was paired with Astaire in Flying Down to Rio (1933), where their dance number "The Carioca" virtually stole the picture.
