At the start of her 25th year of high school teaching, Ellen Rogers feels like celebrating. It's the rebirth of the school year, another chance to love kids in a way that may nudge them to be loving to others. It's also the challenge of reaching the student who's been labeled unreachable, plus the purest joy of all: throwing out ideas and seeing who takes them where.
Rogers, who teaches a course called "Problems of Democracy" at Port Huron Northern High School in Michigan, received an honor a few days ago.
