CHILDREN as young as 19 months can understand basic jokes and comical behaviour, Welsh researchers have discovered.

The study, conducted by academics at Cardiff University alongside experts from the University of California, Santa Cruz, also found toddlers could understand even subtle humour shortly after their second birthdays.

The study, conductedatacost of pounds 62,000, presented toddlers aged between 19 and 36 months with a series of video clips showing adults performing comical actions, varying the degree of subtlety on each occasion.
