The Leonard Cohen fonds, at the Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library at the University of Toronto, is a treasure-trove of impressive material. Included are manuscript drafts of Suzanne with unpublished variant lyrics; letters to Marianne; a draft fragment of Chelsea Hotel scrawled upon a paper napkin; books bearing poetic presentation inscriptions from Irving Layton to Cohen; even a Spice-box of Earth inscribed by Cohen to his mother.
The item that I have decided to focus upon here, however, is not any of the aforementioned gems. It is a small, simple booklet. The cover reads:
