This is the first of three articles directed toward boating enthusiasts with an interest in maintaining and troubleshooting their own equipment. The testing/troubleshooting articles will cover: 1) marine electrical systems, 2) outboard magneto ignitions, and 3) the integrity of your boat's corrosion-protection system.
The first two tests require only a simple digital multimeter (DMM), and the right technique! The corrosion test, though, requires a DMM and a reference electrode. If you're a bit "fuzzy" about reference electrodes, a mini-tutorial will be included on this subject, with many electrode types thoroughly explained.
