Zidovudine (Retrovir or azidothymidine [AZT]) was approved in March 1987 as the first antiviral therapy for HIV disease, when a clinical thai of ZDV versus placebo in patients with advanced disease was terminated early based on evidence of improved survival (Fischl, Richman, Grieco, et al. 1987). ZDV rapidly became recommended standard treatment in AIDS and other advanced HIV disease, although whether it is beneficial to initiate therapy at an earlier, symptom-free stage of illness is still unclear (Concorde Coordinating Committee 1994).
