Basic balance of supply and demand

China's output of coke reached around 330 million tons in 2007. Based on a coal tar yield of 3.26%, the output of coal tar was around 10.76 million tons, an increase of around 10% over 2006.

The main reasons for the growth of coal tar output were as follows. (a) The rapid growth of iron and steel demand worldwide, and especially in China, promoted rapid development of the coking sector here. The rapid increase of coke output in China, in turn, led to growth of coal tar output. (b) The rapid increase of domestic coal tar demand also promoted the growth of coal tar output.
