Whites remain much more likely than nonwhites to receive narcotics for pain treatment at hospital emergency rooms, new data shows, and Boston-area patients and physicians say the stubborn disparity leaves minorities in prolonged discomfort and can alienate them from the health-care system.

"I find that every time I go in the ER I'm rolling the dice," said Magalie Jean-Michel, spokeswoman for the Greater Boston Sickle Cell Disease Association, whose son Rashard, 14, suffers from the painful blood disorder.
