An extended-release form of guanfacine was associated with significant improvements in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, according to a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study of children and adolescents.
Guanfacine, a selective [[alpha].sub.2]-adrenoceptor agonist, was approved for the treatment of hypertension in 2002. In 2007, the Food and Drug Administration approved guanfacine as a treatment for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. Its use was limited, however, because of its short half-life.
