NEW YORK, Mar. 10, 2008 (IPS/GIN) -- Human rights activists are hoping that Nebraska's ban on the use of the electric chair for executions may have ripple effects in the battle against the death penalty in the U.S.
On Feb. 8, the Supreme Court of Nebraska, the only state still using the electric chair as its sole method of execution, ruled that this form of capital punishment was "cruel and unusual." The decision means that the 10 men on Nebraska's death row cannot be executed until the state decides on whether to adopt a replacement execution method.
