Representatives of Gazprom have met with Nigerian oil officials to discuss Russian investment in the Nigerian oil sector, building on communication between Nigeria's President Umaru Yar'Adua and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin last year. The Russian firm revealed that it was interested in gaining "a foothold" in the West African giant, while the Nigerian government indicated that initial investment of up to $2.5bn could be made--not a huge sum in the oil and gas industry. However, it was widely reported that eventual investment could be much greater.
