FIFE environmentalists are set to launch an ambitious campaign aimed at turning Kinghorn and Burntisland into plastic bag free towns.
Friends of the Earth Fife (FOE Fife) hopes to follow the lead of dozens of other British towns by persuading shopkeepers and consumers to adopt reusable cotton or jute bags - with the target of making both communities plastic bag free by 2009.
The group claims plastic bags are used for an average of 12 minutes before being thrown away, with every adult consuming an average of 300 every year. This equates to a staggering 84 million in Fife alone.
