The first thing Jen said to me was "I want my breasts off. I understand you are willing to do that."
Although this request was not unheard of, it was uncommon. Certainly I had felt that it might be an appropriate choice for a few women, but it was not something I would do without a considerable amount of discussion.
I learned Jen, who was 35, recently had a very close friend, who was 40, die from breast cancer. Jen was a single parent of two children, ages 7 and 10. She "couldn't die and leave them alone." Her parents were older and could not care for them and their father had long since left their lives.
