The Christian world opens its celebration of Holy Week, the most solemn period in the liturgical calendar, with Palm Sunday, the last Sunday of Lent 40 days after Ash Wednesday.
Today, millions of palm fronds and olive branches, traditionally used by nations as a symbol of joy and victory over adversaries, will be waved by churchgoers and blessed by priests in churches to recall Jesus' triumphant return to the city of Jerusalem.
As he entered the city astride a donkey on that day over 2,000 years ago, the people cheered: "Hossana to the Son of David! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!"
