One strong source of external support for schools comes from VH1, one of the pioneers of cable television and a partner with AASA on an annual recognition program at the association's annual conference.
Richard Kaplan, superintendent of New Brunswick, N.J., Public Schools, is the 2008 award winner. Previous honorees were Duncan N.P. "Pat" Pritchett Jr., superintendent of the Indianapolis Public Schools; John Lange, superintendent of Adams County School District 14 in Commerce City, Colo.; and Carol Johnson, superintendent of the Memphis, Tenn., City Schools.
