The United States is getting bigger. But it's the waistlines that are expanding, not the borders.

According to a study conducted by the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, in 2006, 25 percent of 22 U.S. states were obese. In 1990, no more than 15 percent of the population was obese in any state.

It's easy to assign some blame to the restaurants for this nationwide bloating. They serve portions that are 1 1/2 to 2 times larger than the recommended portion sizes and they'll plop gobs of french fries and buttered appetizers alongside the gargantuan entrees.
