The National Institutes of Health (NIH) moved quickly after President Bush signed the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2008 on Dec. 26, 2007. The act made the NIH's voluntary Public Access Policy (NOT-OD-05-022) mandatory. The new policy was posted on Jan. 11, 2008, and takes effect on April 7, 2008. Clearly the NIH was ready to move on the matter, so this means a busy year for the NIH and for all the institutions that support NIH research.
