A Harry Potter book bought for pennies from a Northamptonshire library has been sold for thousands of pounds at auction.

The first edition copy of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone was sold by Northamptonshire County Council's library service as part of a book clearance in 1999 for "less than [pounds sterling]2", because it was in a poor condition.

At Christie's auction room in London, the same book - which was one of only 500 first editions printed - was sold to a private investor for [pounds sterling]4,000.
