The numbers in two new Defense Department studies are stark. A woman in the U.S. military has a one in three chance of being sexually harassed. One in 20 women reported unwanted sexual contact, ranging from touching to rape.
We aren't even sure if those figures tell the whole story. Many victims, in any setting, are reluctant to make reports. New York Democratic Rep. Louise Slaughter said, "Even if these numbers are accurate, the problem of violence against women in the military remains pervasive."
That's an appropriately strong wording.
