This year, we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the European Parliament. The period from 19 March 1958, the date of the constituent meeting' of the European Parliamentary Assembly in Strasbourg, and 19 March 2008 is one marked by many important milestones on the road of European integration - ones which have had a significant impact on the lives of Europe's citizens.
Back in 1958, 142 members represented the then 168 million citizens of the six founding member states of the European Community. After the forthcoming European elections in June 2009, 751 members will represent almost 500 million citizens of 27 member states.
