Years ago, wrapping up a regular eye exam, my ophthalmologist pronounced my 20/10 eyesight still spectacularly proficient, and then he snickered.
"One of these years you're going to need reading glasses, though," he said. "You're getting close to that age."
At the time, I thought he was being a little mean. Now that I have to whip out vision aids for restaurant menus, road maps, sewing on buttons and just plain reading, I realize he wasn't - he was completely wicked.
