The shrieks of an adjacent playground drifted back and forth on the nervous tides of this roller-coaster game.
For John Meyler, that must have seemed an appropriate acoustic. The Wexford manager watched his team get to within a hair's breath of a wonderful, redemptive victory in Pairc Ui Chaoimh only for Cork to deliver four unanswered scores at the death and consign them to the League wastelands.
True, a Wexford appeal is pending on the fractious issue of Cork's missed rubbers in the competition but, for now, they are out, with only a possible relegation shoot-out pending against Dublin.
