In 1985, the Quebec City's efforts to preserve its heritage were officially recognized by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee. On December 2 of that year, the Historic District of Old Quebec became the first North American urban site added to UNESCO's prestigious register of places of historical worldwide importance. In announcing the honour, UNESCO called the Old City "a world heritage jewel." The recognition is a great source of pride to Quebecers.
